When should you convert one BOQ item to multiple schedule activities?
Not every Bill of Quantities (BOQ) item should stay as a single activity in the schedule. In fact, there are three cases where you must break it down:
Execution spans over time – Example: Paint. Though listed as one BOQ item, it actually involves primer, first coat, second coat, and final coat. Treating it as one activity hides the true timeline and creates misleading delays.
Different locations – Example: Tiles. A single BOQ item may cover both bathroom and bedroom, but each has different logic, predecessors, and successors. Combining them into one activity distorts progress tracking.
Different materials – Example: False ceiling. Framing and boarding are distinct tasks with separate procurement and sequencing. Grouping them as one activity risks inaccurate updates.
Breaking down one BOQ item into multiple activities ensures accurate scheduling, realistic progress measurement, and clear logic flow.
